From May 13 through August 24, 2009, three ELCA pastors from the WV-WMD synod will put foot to pedal / seat to saddle and travel over 13,000 miles on a bicycle built for three. They will be making stops in each synod, the 2009 Youth Gathering and the ChurchWide Assembly. These three pastors (Rev. Fred Soltow, Rev. Ron Schlak, and Rev. David Twedt) are dedicated to hunger and wellness issues. Further information about this group, and their mission, can be found at www.tourderevs.org.

During the annual Synod Assembly in June, 2008, Pastor Randy issued a challenge to all other churches in the synod to sponsor the Tour de Revs on their journey as they promote awareness of, and raise funds for, World Hunger. The Bittinger Lutheran Parish has pledged to cover 3 stops on their journey at $1/mile.

On September 15, this group traveled through Garrett County as a part of their preliminary tour through the synod, and stopped at the three parish churches and had lunch at Emmanuel with parish members.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

"Shawls ... made for centuries universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to fly above their troubles’

Members of the parish meet the first Wednesday of each month at the parsonage to crochet or knit prayer shawls.  Being able to crochet or knit is not a requirement; if you are interested in learning, come and someone will show you how to get started on this project. All are invited to join and share with this group.

While making the shawls, prayers are said for the recipients. The finished shawls are given to individuals who are ill, lonely, in pain or suffering, or who need a special comforting hug. A prayer is said before starting each shawl, and again at the time the shawl is given.

Cookbooks

A cookbook, ”The Fruit of the Spirit,”  has been compiled as a part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Bittinger Lutheran Parish.  This cookbook, containing approximately 425 recipes from members and friends of the parish,  is available for $10.00. Any questions or orders can be directed to Linda Buckel, Cindy Richardson, or Ruth Beckman.
